TAKE A ZONAL APPROACH! Think of your entrance in terms of individual zones, seamlessly connected. Setting up your mat in the right way helps to minimize the transfer of tracked-in dirt to surrounding floor surfaces.
EXTERIOR - Primary Entrance
When visitors approach your building, their footwear holds residue from the surrounding outdoor environment.
Cue…ZONE 1:
Mud, grit and moisture not only make a mess, they also generate dangerous slip hazards. Zone 1 is all about reducing that initial surface grime before visitors even enter the building. For this zone, ABS West can offer exterior-grade inserts with a tougher bristle. Starting your mat outside can be particularly useful if interior space is limited.
INTERIOR - Primary Entrance
Some residue can still remain as visitors enter through the front door, particularly in wet conditions.
Cue… ZONE 2:
A softer bristle can be used in zone 2 to remove additional residue that remains on footwear or wheeled traffic. The mat in this zone collects dirt and grime to prevent it soiling the surrounding floor surface.
INTERIOR - Clean off Zone
Circulation zones & reception areas can also be utilised as matting areas. A final clean-off can dry soles and wheels.

An appropriately sized & configured triple zone system can significantly reduce cleaning and maintenance while helping to prolong the life of surrounding floor surfaces. Mats collect dirt and retain it until dedicated cleaning can occur.

AN ENTRANCE MAT SHOULD BE OF ADEQUATE SIZE TO ALLOW THE SCRAPE, WIPE AND RETAIN PROCESS TO HAPPEN.

The minimum length for this to occur is 2.1m however, 6 meters (or about 8-10 foot falls is considered, by experts, to be optimum). If you have limited interior space, adding an external entrance mat provides greater scope to achieve the optimum walk-off length.
